sel-assessment

My name is Thierno Diallo, before I took this class, I had never liked writing. I am the oldest son in family of five children. I am the first generation to attend college in my family. My both parents had never got a chance to get a higher level of education. I’m currently a civil engineering student at City College of New York pursuing a bachelor’s degree. One of the reasons I choose civil engineering is because I do not like writing. However, in this class (writing for engineering), I found a lot difference compare to other writing class I took before. In this class, I learn about technical writing than literature or poetry writing. Here are some of the milestone I was able to achieve:

  • Technical description
  • Memo
  • Engineering proposal
  • Lab report
  • Digital portfolio
  • And other assignment

Here is how we wrote each assignment. The first assignment was a technical description. In the class, the professor asked each student to choose one object to describe and tell her for approve. The object I choose was my iPhone case. I wrote it first, and I got feedback from one of my classmates before i submit to the professor who also gave me feedback before the final submission. You can click here to see the first feedback from my classmate. After this feedback, it helped me to improve for final draft of the technical description.

The second assignment i wrote was the memo. In this essay, it was to find one that I should improve as an engineering student at CCNY. I wrote about the bookstore how they should improve for the students.

The third assignment was the lab report. In this assignment, I learned how to work with in a group, how to do research online and interview, and how to conduct a survey. The lab report was about the security system in CCNY and how student and staff fell about installing a turnstile or Id scanner in the entrance at any building in CCNY. You can visit the result we find in here

The final project also was the another group project. We proposed about installing an id scanner or turnstile in all building at CCNY. In this project, it helped to improve my communication in a team project. I learned how to do a project delivery phase, how to estimate a budget. Before we submitted our final project, we got feedback another group. It helped us improving a lot. At the end of this project we were able to do a presentation for our engineering proposal in from of the class and our professor.

I learned a lot from my professor who make everybody get engage during the class. She makes everybody to participate and she gave me a feedback each time to help me improve for the next time. I also learned from my class classmate during each essay I wrote. During each essay, I have to give feedback to one student while I got feedback from another student. It helped me to improve my writing skills.

Overall, after I took this class, I was able to write an engineering proposal, a lab report and a technical description. And also it change my view about writing in general and why writing is important. I am very grateful of my achievement, because this will help me on my carrier path to become a good engineering. I would like think the CCNY, my professor Sabina Pringle and my classmate.
